Even on a winters day, Athlone is an interesting historical place to while away some time. Amongst many shops (both on street and in a shopping centre – that has an arts and craft shop), there are many fabulous places to eat.
Two of our favourite places to eat are Beans & Leaves and Bastion Kitchen. Both have a variety of breakfasts, cakes and main meals, which include great meat dishes and delightful vegetarian meals.
If you are interested in history, then Athlone Castle is a must see place to see. Its foundations are steeped in history but it has an extensive modern interactive exhibition. Although I never normally enjoy history/museums, I found this modern approach to getting information across, quite refreshing and enjoyable.
If you like walking, then there are several around Athlone. The Shannon Banks Nature Trail starts near Athlone Castle, there is a board by the river that gives you information about the walk.
As with a lot of areas of Ireland, Atlone often has different forms of art, which often changes.
Athlone is a great place to visit and we would like to go more often. or visit Athlone Website
